Six Steps to Start Your Mushroom Farm

Starting a mushroom farm — whether as a hobby or a small business — is more accessible than ever. Follow these six foundational steps to set yourself up for success in mushroom cultivation.

Step 1: Choose Your Species

Begin with forgiving, fast-growing species like oyster mushrooms. They colonize quickly, tolerate a range of conditions, and fruit reliably. Once you gain experience, expand to shiitake, lion’s mane, or more demanding varieties.

Step 2: Set Up Your Growing Space

Mushrooms don’t need sunlight, but they do need consistent temperature, high humidity, and fresh air exchange. A spare room, closet, basement, or even a Martha tent setup can work well for small-scale growing.

Step 3: Source Quality Spawn

Your mushroom spawn is the foundation of your entire operation. Quality grain spawn or liquid cultures from a reputable supplier like MycoStock ensures strong, viable genetics and clean cultures that colonize quickly.

Step 4: Prepare Your Substrate

Different species prefer different substrates. Oyster mushrooms thrive on straw or hardwood sawdust. Shiitake prefer supplemented hardwood. Our pre-sterilized substrates and all-in-one grow bags simplify this step considerably.

Step 5: Inoculate and Incubate

Introduce your spawn to the substrate under clean conditions, then store in a warm, dark location for colonization. This phase typically takes 2-4 weeks depending on the species and temperature.

Step 6: Fruit and Harvest

Once fully colonized, introduce fruiting conditions: lower temperatures, increased humidity (85-95%), indirect light, and fresh air exchange. Mushrooms will appear within days and can be harvested when caps begin to flatten.
