Ready-to-Fruit Mushroom Blocks: The Fastest Path to Fresh Mushrooms

Ready-to-fruit mushroom blocks are fully colonized substrate blocks that are ready to produce mushrooms as soon as you open the bag. There is no inoculation, no waiting for colonization, and no mixing required — the mycelium has already done all the work. All you need to provide is humidity, fresh air, and a little patience. Most species begin pinning within 5-10 days of opening, with harvestable mushrooms following within 1-2 weeks.

What Is a Ready-to-Fruit Block?

A ready-to-fruit block starts as a sterilized substrate bag — typically Masters Mix (hardwood sawdust and soy hull pellets) or supplemented hardwood — that has been inoculated with grain spawn and allowed to colonize fully in our climate-controlled incubation room. By the time it reaches you, the entire block is permeated with healthy, vigorous mycelium that is ready to transition from vegetative growth to fruiting.

These blocks are the same ones we use in our own production fruiting rooms. We grow-test every culture on these substrates before offering them for sale, so you know the genetics and the substrate are proven to produce results together.

How to Fruit a Ready-to-Fruit Block

When your block arrives, cut 2-3 slits or a large X-shaped opening through the bag where the substrate is most densely colonized. Some growers prefer to remove the block from the bag entirely and place it on a wire rack or inside a fruiting chamber — both approaches work well. The key environmental factors for successful fruiting are humidity (85-95% relative humidity for most species), fresh air exchange, indirect light, and temperatures appropriate for your species.

The simplest fruiting setup is a clear plastic storage tote with a few holes drilled in the sides for air exchange. Mist the inside of the tote 2-3 times daily to maintain humidity, and fan briefly after misting to provide fresh air. Within 5-14 days, you should see small pins forming at the openings or across the surface of the block. These pins will double in size daily and reach harvest size within 3-7 more days depending on the species.

Species Available as Ready-to-Fruit Blocks

We offer ready-to-fruit blocks for our most popular gourmet species. Blue oyster blocks are the most forgiving — they fruit aggressively in a wide range of conditions and produce large, beautiful clusters. Lion’s mane blocks produce single, large fruiting bodies with cascading white spines that are both stunning to watch and delicious to eat. Shiitake blocks benefit from a cold-water soak (12-24 hours submerged in cold water) to trigger fruiting, after which they produce dense, flavorful caps with the characteristic cracked pattern on top.

King oyster, pink oyster, golden oyster, and chestnut mushroom blocks are also available seasonally. Each species has slightly different fruiting preferences, and we include care instructions specific to the species with every block we ship.

Multiple Flushes

A single ready-to-fruit block can produce multiple harvests, called flushes. After your first harvest, soak the block in cold water for 6-12 hours to rehydrate it, then return it to your fruiting conditions. Most blocks produce 2-3 flushes, with each successive flush yielding somewhat less than the previous one. The total yield from a 5-pound block varies by species but typically ranges from 1-2 pounds of fresh mushrooms across all flushes.
