Care and Handling: How to Store and Use Your MycoStock Products
Mushroom growing supplies are live biological products that require proper handling to maintain their viability and performance. The care you give your cultures, spawn, and substrates between delivery and inoculation directly affects your results. This guide covers storage recommendations, shelf life expectations, and handling best practices for every product category we sell.
Liquid Cultures
Liquid culture syringes contain living mycelium suspended in nutrient broth. Upon arrival, store them in the refrigerator (36-46 degrees Fahrenheit) if you are not using them immediately. Cold temperatures slow the metabolism of the mycelium without killing it, extending shelf life to 2-3 months. Never freeze liquid cultures — ice crystals will rupture cell walls and kill the mycelium. Before use, let the syringe reach room temperature (approximately 30 minutes out of the fridge) and shake gently to distribute mycelium evenly throughout the liquid.
Grain Spawn
Grain spawn is fully colonized and ready to use upon arrival. For best results, use grain spawn within 1-2 weeks of receiving it. If you need to store it, keep it in the refrigerator to slow metabolic activity. Grain spawn that has been refrigerated may need 24-48 hours at room temperature to wake up before use. Before mixing into substrate, break up the colonized grain into individual kernels — this distributes the mycelium more evenly and speeds up substrate colonization.
Substrate Bags and All-in-One Bags
Sterilized substrate bags and all-in-one grow bags should be inoculated as soon as possible after arrival. While the filter patch keeps the interior sterile, the substrate is at its optimal moisture content when it ships. Prolonged storage can allow moisture redistribution or condensation buildup inside the bag. If you must store substrate bags before use, keep them in a clean, temperature-stable location out of direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate substrate bags — the temperature change can cause condensation that alters hydration levels.
Ready-to-Fruit Blocks
Ready-to-fruit blocks are fully colonized and eager to fruit. Ideally, begin fruiting within 1-3 days of arrival. If you need to delay, store the block in the refrigerator — this pauses the fruiting trigger and can extend the window by 1-2 weeks. When ready, remove from the fridge, let it reach room temperature, and initiate fruiting by cutting slits and providing humidity and fresh air.
General Handling Tips
Always wash your hands or wear clean gloves before handling any mushroom growing supplies. Wipe injection ports, bag surfaces, and work areas with isopropyl alcohol (70% concentration is ideal — it evaporates slower than 99% and is more effective at killing microorganisms). Work in the cleanest environment available to you, and minimize the time any sterile product is exposed to open air. These simple precautions dramatically reduce contamination risk and help you get the most from every MycoStock product.
